Bruštulani (Candied) Almonds

Traditional handmade delicacy - candied almonds show us that our predecessors knew how to make a tasty treat using only three ingredients. Try it!


  • 1 cup almonds
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 vanilla sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 cup water


Put the ingredients into a wide shallow pot or pan over moderate heat. Let the sugar melt and turn the mixture completely liquid. Since the water will evaporate slowly, and the sugar syrup will harden, you need to stir the mixture continuously using a wooden spoon until the sugar turns golden brown and sticks to the almonds, and the almonds start to crackle. Once a caramel crust forms around the almonds, place them on baking paper over a baking tray and leave them to cool. Then place them into paper bags or jars. By doing so their shelf life lasts up to two months.
